Who was the first person to believe in you?

Here’s a shout out to everyone who has helped someone start in a new career, industry, or education. It’s a great thing when people with authority, influence, or knowledge use their position to help someone with their first steps on a new journey.  They are like an Angel Investor that gets someone started but expects nothing in return.

Who was the first person to believe in you? Who gave you your first break in industry, career, or education?

For me it was John. He managed the department I worked for when I was a co-op student. As a college student, when I worked for John, I always felt like a full member of the team. He complimented my work, he told me my opinion mattered, he instilled confidence in me that I could do any task at-hand. A few weeks before I graduated, John extended a job offer to keep me on his team. It felt great. I worked hard and my manager noticed. He believed in me and gave me the confidence to both learn new skills and contribute to the team. John believed in me.

If you are fortunate enough that the person who played this role in your life is still living, then reach out to them this week with a word of thanks. Create a smile. You’ll be glad you did, and they will be too. Then look for opportunities to help someone else with their first big break. You may be starting the journey for someone who will go to places unseen and accomplish remarkable things to benefit all of us.

 Onward and upward!
